Willem van Aelst

c1627-1683 Netherlands-Baroque Still-life

Brief Biography-Willem van Aelst was from a wealthy family in Delft where he was taught by his uncle Evert van Aelst, a still life painter. When he was eighteen he went to France and from there to Florence where he became court painter to the de' Medici family in 1649. He eventually settled in Amsterdam where he taught Rachel Ruysch and other noted artists of his time. He himself is one of the most notable still life artists to this day.
