Jorge Afonso

c. 1470-1540 Portugal/Renaissance

 

Brief Biography-Jorge Afonso was selected court painter by King Manuel I and later by João III. His atelier was adjacent to the Saint Dominic monastery in Lisbon, where he had numerous students. Amongst them were renowned artists such as Vasco Fernandes, Cristóvão de Figueiredo and Gregório Lopes to name but a few. One of the many altarpieces he painted is in the National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon.
