José de Alcibar

c. 1730-1803 Mexico

 

Brief Biography-José de Alcibar was a Mexican artist who mainly painted religious subject and portraits of Mexican notables. He was born in Mexico City and was prominent in the late eighteenth century. His work was commissioned by numerus churches throughout Mexico. In 1784, he was a founder member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. There is an influence in his style, of painters from Spain who visited Mexico during the period.
