Brief Biography-Jose Ferraz de Almeida Junior from Brazil has an 'Artist's Day' celebrated in his honour on his birthday every year. He began his career by taking formal tuition in Rio de Janeiro with the help of funds raised by a local priest from his home town. In 1876, the Emperor Pedro the Second awarded him funds to study in the School of Fine Arts in Paris where he stayed until 1882. He produced many great works of art during his time in Paris, some of which he brought back to Brazil. On his return to Brazil he opened his own studio and excelled doing portrait commissions. He became a Knight of the 'Order of the Rose' and made a few returns to Europe before finally settling in Sao Paulo. In 1899, he was sadly murdered on a street by a cousin because of an affair he had with his wife. |
