Albrecht Altdorfer

1480-1538 Germany-Northern Renaissance

Brief Biography-Albrecht Altdorfer was from the town of Regensburg on the Danube where he was the town architect and he eventually became the Mayor; he involved himself in politics for most of his life. Regensburg or Altdorf was where he took his name from. His father interested him in art as he was a miniaturist painter. Albrecht's tour of the Alps inspired him to do what were regarded as the first true landscape paintings of the time. The works of Lucas Cranach and Giorgione had a lasting impression on him and is evident in some of his paintings. His work led him to be the prime member of The Danube School. He gained several commissions from the Royal Court, one being 'The battle of Alexander at Issus'. Although he is mostly noted for being the founder of landscapes on their own as a genre, he did a considerable amount of engravings and woodcuts which he excelled at producing.
