Friedrich (Ritter) Von Amerling

1803-1878 Austria-Romanticism

Brief Biography-Friedrich von Amerling was a portraitist from Vienna; He began studies at the age of twelve at the academy of arts which lasted for nine years and another two years in the academy in Prague. He moved to London for a year where he was swayed by the work of Thomas Lawrence. He travelled most European countries during his life, marring four times and received numerous honours including a knighthood. In Vienna, his castle became known as Amerlingschloessl. He worked mostly for aristocracy and was the Austrian court painter for many years. Teaching was another career he had; one of his pupils was József Borsos the Hungarian artist. To this day, he is regarded as one the foremost artists of Austria.
