Julian Ashton

1851-1942 Australia

 

Brief Biography-Julian Ashton was born in Surrey England and spent his early years in Cornwall. At the age of twenty-one he moved to Paris where he succeeded as a painter and illustrator. He left for Melbourne in 1878 where he worked as an illustrator; after for five years he moved to Sydney where he became a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1890, he established the Julian Ashton Art School which has included several of Australia's most renowned artists to this day.
