Harriet Backer

1845-1932 Norway-Impressionism/Realism

 

Brief Biography-Harriet Backer was from Holmestrand Norway and moved to Oslo at the age of twelve. She had schooling from notable Norwegian artists such as Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and later knud Bergslien. Her travels took her to Munich and Paris where she was inspired by impressionism; however, her work may be classed as realism. In her later years,s she ran her own art school which included several students who became prominent artists in Norway. To this day her work is highly regarded not just in Norway but throughout Europe.
