Ludolf Backhuysen (Bakhuizen)

1630-1708 Netherlands Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Ludolf Backhuysen was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He moved from his home town of Emden in Germany to Amsterdam when he was twenty years of age. He studied painting in Amsterdam and when the William van de Veldes left Holland in 1672 he subsequently established himself as the leading maritime artist of the time. His works were commissioned by many of the European nobility.
