Marie Bashkirtseff

1858-1884 Russia/France-Painter and Sculptor

Brief Biography-Marie Bashkirtseff was from a nobility family in Poltava in Ukraine. After her parents separated the family travelled Europe before settling in a village they bought near Nice.
She began writing at the age of fourteen and studied languages. Music was her main ambition until laryngitis took her voice; hence she then turned to painting. The family moved to Paris where she joined the Rodolphe Julian's Academy and was taught by Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
Jules Bastien Lepage was her chief inspiration and she took to painting the poorer folk on the streets of Paris. She was also noted for writing for the feminist newspaper La Citoyenne. At the age of twenty-six she died prematurely from tuberculosis. All her works were exhibited after her death.
