Arnold Böcklin

1827-1901 Switzerland-Symbolism

Brief Biography-Arnold Böcklin was born in Basel Switzerland. He studied under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1845. His studies later took him to Belgium and Paris before venturing to Rome in 1850. In Rome, he got married and there he became associated with Anselm Feuerbach. He was strongly influenced by the Italian works he encountered.
He had fourteen children, some of them died in fancy. It is expected that it was during this period his works projected a degree of melancholy, as in his 'Self Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle'. He was to paint five versions of his most renowned work 'The Island of the Dead'.
Throughout his life he moved at different times between Italy, Germany and Switzerland before finally settling in Fiesole beside Florence, where he died in 1901.
