Hieronymus Bosch

1450-1516 Netherlands-Northern Renaissance

Brief Biography-Hieronymus Bosch was born into a family of artists in 's-Hertogenbosch where he spent the whole of his life. It is thought he took the name Bosch from the town name as his real name was Jheronimous Anthonissen van Aken. His grandfather painted a fresco in the Cathedral of Saint John where his father also painted figurines and furniture. He may have learned how to paint from his father. The town of 's-Hertogenbosch was very religious and there was a "Brethren of the Common Life" foundation which Bosch was affiliated to. Religion was evidently the stimulus for Bosch's paintings. He married Aleyt Goyaerts van den Meervenne who provided him with a considerable dowry and was not wanting for money. He achieved a good reputation for his work and received several commissions mostly for altarpieces. There aren't many facts recorded about his life; it is known however that he died a famous and respected artist.
