Hermenegildo Bustos

1832-1907 Mexico/Portraitist

Brief Biography-Hermenegildo Bustos, or José Hermenegildo de la Luz Bustos Hernández, to be exact, was born in Purísima del Rincón, Mexico. He worked in several trades as a youth and painted his first recorded portrait, which was of the parish priest Vincente Arriaga, when he was eighteen. In 1850, he had a short, but haphazard tuition period, with the portraitist Juan Nepomuceno from León. In 1858, his portrait of Mexico’s renowned President, Benito Juárez, gained him notability, however, it wasn’t until after the Mexican Revolution, that he was more nationally recognised. During the twentieth century, many of his works were exhibited internationally. Today, the municipal seat of Purísima del Rincón, Purísima de Bustos, is named after him.
