Vincenzo Carducci

1576-1638 Italy/Spain-Baroque

Brief Biography-Vincente Carducho was born Vincenzo Carducci in Florence. In 1585, he left for Spain with his brother Bartholomew who worked at El Escorial for Philip II. He succeeded Bartholomew in 1609 as painter to the King to finish his brother’s work in the gallery of the palace of the Pardo. His next major work was for the Carthusian Monastery at Paular where he painted fifty-four pictures in four years; they are of scenes from the life of Saint Bruno and his order. In 1633, he succeeded in getting a royal decree for the remission of prohibitive taxes on paintings, they were abolished four years later. Apart from his paintings, he is known for his highly regarded literary work ‘Dialogues of the Excellences of Painting’ in which he commended the work of Michelangelo and disparaged that of Caravaggio.
