Pieter Claesz

c. 1597-1661 Holland-Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Pieter Claesz was from Berchem, Belgium. His son Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem who was a successful landscape artist took his name from the town in which he was born. Pieter worked with Willem Claeszoon Heda in Haarlem principally on still-life painting. Together Pieter and Willem were considered to be the foremost still-life artists during the Dutch Golden Age. Pieter was a member of the Guild of Saint Luke and was known to have tutored several artist of the period.
