Thomas le Clear

1818-1882 America

 

Brief Biography-Thomas le Clear from Owego, New York began to paint when he was twelve years old. He painted portraits in Canada when the family moved there in 1832. Mostly self taught, he didn't study formally until he was twenty one under Henry Inman in New York City.
He moved to Buffalo until the year 1860, there he taught private lessons and became associated with the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy which he helped form along with Henry W. Rogers. He spent time back in New York where he set up studio and eventually became a National Academician. Portraits and genre scenes were his forte.
