Pieter Codde

1599-1678 Holland-Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Pieter Codde was a portrait and genre painter. He lived and worked in Amsterdam and is perhaps most famously known for finishing the work by Frans Hals of the Amsterdam Civic Guards, dubbed The Meagre Company. His style of painting appears to have been influenced by Hals.
He was a friend of the artist Willem Cornelisz Duyster who was the same age of himself. They were known to have had an argument which ended in bloodshed. Duyster was also a student of his. Codde’s works are on view in various galleries throughout Europe and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
