Charles Demuth

1883-1935 America-Precisionism

 

Brief Biography-Charles Demuth from Lancaster, Pennsylvania was considered a champion of Precisionism. He lived most of his life in his home town whenever he wasn’t travelling to study. He studied at the Franklin and Marshall Academy, Drexel University and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; he took classes with Thomas Anschutz. In Paris, he entered the Académie Colarossi and the Académie Julian.
In America, he became recognized as a leading modern artist; he moved from mostly watercolours to tempera and oils. His style was influenced by Fauvism, Dada and Cubism.
He had a lifelong health problem with his hip which gave a limp. In his late life, he suffered with diabetes which became the cause of his death at the early age of fifty-one.
