Wybrand de Geest

1592-1661 Holland-Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Wybrand de Geest was regarded as one of the finest portrait artists of the Dutch Golden Age. He was from Leeuwarden in the Netherlands where he spent most of his life. His father who was a glazier gave him his early education and he later studied art under Abraham Bloemaert. He travelled to France and Italy. When in Rome he was a member of the Bentveughels, the society of Dutch artists. On his return to Leeuwarden he became court painter to the Calvinist Frisian Nassau. Two of his sons and a grandson also became painters. His wife Hendrickje Fransdr Uylenburgh was a niece of Rembrandt.
