Heinrich Louis Theodor Gurlitt

1812-1897 Germany/Landscapes

Brief Biography-Heinrich Louis Theodor Gurlitt was Danish-born and became German. He lived most of his life in Germany. He received his first lessons in drawing and painting at an early age in Hamburg and later at the Copenhagen Academy, where he exhibited many paintings. He made several trips to Sweden, Norway, Austria, and Italy. He also holidayed in Greece, Spain, and Portugal; many of the landscapes from these countries inspired him. He was married three times due to the death of his first two wives. Depending on the season, he spent the last years of his life between Berlin-Steglitz and Naundorf. He had a son called Cornelius, who became an art historian.
