Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz

1824-1902 Estonia/Portraitist

 

Brief Biography-Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz, portraitist and daughter of Augustus Matthias Hagen studied at the University of Tartu. She was given a grant to study under Moritz Rugendas in Germany for three years, after which she went to Italy with her father to study. On her return she married the astronomer Ludwig Schwarz whom she travelled to Siberia with on an expedition, sketching as she went. Her later years were spent mainly in Saint Petersburg where she was the first female to be nominated to the Imperial Academy of Arts.
