Pieter de Hooch
1629-1684 Netherlands/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Pieter de Hooch was born in Rotterdam. His nearest influence was Jan Vermeer. Gabriƫl Metsu and Pieter Cornelisz van Slingelandt are also said to have impressed him. However, he trained under Nicolaes Berchem in Haarlem. In 1654, he belonged to the Guild of Painters in Delft. He travelled to other Dutch cities while working for a merchant, where he would have encountered some of his contemporaries. In 1667, he moved to Amsterdam to reach a larger market. His paintings are primarily affluent household scenes, but his work leans more on a commercial plane than his more appreciated domestic Delft scenes. |
