Johann Hulsman

1610-1652 Germany/Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Johann Hulsman, or Holzmann, was born in Cologne. He was a pupil of Augustin Braun and was influenced by Frans and Dirck Hals along with Jurgen Ovens. He was a painter, etcher, graphic artist and draftsman. Johann Toussyn assisted him with a Cologne altarpiece. The nobility of Cologne commissioned his work. He was a citizen and master in the guild in 1637. He also became active in Antwerp, Frankfurt and Italy. Johann Frans Ermels was a pupil of his alongside the portraitist Johannes Buns who had been a pupil of Govert Teunisz Flinck in Amsterdam.
