Jules Joseph Lefebvre

1834-1912 France-Figure Painter

 

Brief Biography-Jules Joseph Lefebvre from Tournan, France was tutored by Léon Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He quickly became a successful artist in Paris. Winning the Prix de Rome allowed him to study for five years in Rome. The works of Andrea del Sarto had an influence on him whilst he was in Italy. He Later taught at the Academie Julian in Paris where he had numerous students, many were from America and subsequently became successful artists who included Childe Hassam, John Twachtman and many more. He received an abundance of honours and became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
