Jan Lievens (Lievensz)
1607-1674 Holland/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Jan Lievens was from Leiden, where he began his training in art when he was only eight years old. From ten to twelve, he studied in Amsterdam under Pieter Lastman. When back in Leiden, Jan worked with Rembrandt for five years; both men influenced each other's work. After that, he worked in London for three years before moving to Antwerp, where the styles of Anthony van Dyck and Peter Paul Rubens influenced him. He spent the remainder of his life in Amsterdam, where he received numerous commissions, notably those for the Burgomasters' chamber in the town hall of Amsterdam.
