Filippo Lippi

c.1406-1469 Italy-Early Renaissance

Brief Biography-Filippo di Tommaso di Lippo, known as Filippo Lippi was from Florence. He was orphaned at the age of eight and was admitted to the Carmelite friary of Carmine. He took his vows; however it turned out he wasn't entirely devoted as he later had an affair with a nun who bore him a son and a daughter. He left the priory in 1432 and eventually married. His inspirations to paint came from watching Masaccio paint in the Carmine church and subsequently painted a fresco in the Santa Maria del Carmine. In 1437 he was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Barbadori which led to several altarpiece commissions.
In 1452 Fra Angelico turned down a commission to do a fresco in the choir of the Cathedral of Prato, Lippi took it on and the task lasted for twelve years. He painted the Lives of Saints Stephen and John the Baptist during this time which is considered to be one of his best works. In 1466 he finished the frescos in Prato and the following year he began work on the frescos in the Cathedral of Spoleto in Umbria. Fra Diamante assisted him and he completed the work in the year that he died. Lippi was buried in Spoleto against the wishes of the Florentines.
It is thought Filippo Lippi strongly influenced the young Botticelli who had been one of his pupils.
