Cristóvão Lopes

c. 1516-1594 Portugal/High Renaissance

 

Brief Biography-Cristóvão Lopes of Lisbon was the son and pupil of Gregório Lopes. He was also a pupil of Alonso Sánchez Coello, who trained under Anthonis Mor, the Dutch portraitist. On the death of his father he became painter to King John III. He was principally a portraitist who was influenced by the mannerist style of Antwerp. Religious paintings of his were hung in the Chapel at Belem and Royal portraits can be seen in the Lisbon Museum of Ancient Art.
