Simone Martini
c. 1280-1344 Italy/Medieval

Brief Biography-Simone Martini, who was born in Siena, profoundly influenced his successors and the school of Sienese painters. He was, according to Vasari, a pupil of Giotto; however, most scholars agree that he was an unswerving pupil of Duccio. However, there does not appear to be any reference to Duccio in Vasari's account of Martini. The works of the sculptor Giovanni Pisano, who was close to Giotto, influenced him. There is a strong influence of French Gothic art in his works. He undertook several tasks, one of his most noted being the Annunciation, painted with his brother-in-law Lippo Memmi at the Uffizi, Florence. Vasari states that Simone went to Rome with Giotto and worked at the court of the Pope, where he did the Navicella in mosaic amongst other works under the influence of Giotto. |
