Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier

1815-1891 France-Romanticism

 

Brief Biography-Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier was from Lyon in France; he was born into a reasonably well off family and was allowed to go into painting when he was seventeen. He achieved early success being recognised by Sir Richard Wallace who bought many of his paintings; they hang today in "the Wallace Collection" in London. Besides his genre paintings he is known for his Napoleonic paintings. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour among many other honours during his lifetime.
