Brief Biography-Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier was from Lyon in France; he was born into a reasonably well-off family and was allowed to go into painting when he was seventeen. He achieved early success when Sir Richard Wallace bought many of his paintings; they hang today in "the Wallace Collection" in London. Besides his genre paintings, he is renowned for his Napoleonic paintings. He gained the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour among many other honours. |
