Giuseppe de Nittis

1846-1884 Italy-Impressionism

 

Brief Biography-Giuseppe de Nittis from Barletta, Italy studied at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts. He was influenced by the Macchiaioli group of artists who aspired to En plein air or outdoor painting. In Paris he achieved considerable success through his association with many of the impressionist artists such as Edgar Degas. He helped promote the use of pastels and his works were taught to have impressed James McNeill Whistler. He was awarded the Légion d’honneur before he died suddenly of a stroke when he was 38 years old.
