Brief Biography-Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro of Lisbon was the son and brother of artists Manuel Maria and Rafael. His father trained him, and the Portuguese portraitist Miguel Lupi influenced him. A patron financed him to go to Paris to study, and there he was influenced by the realists Courbet and Manet. His works consisted of portraits, mostly of Portuguese notables such as the poet Antero de Quental and other renowned writers. He was part of The Lion’s Group, made up of artists and writers of Lisbon for discussion on many topics. Pinheiro became director of the now Chiado Museum, Lisbon, which presently houses many of his works. |
