Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro

1857-1929 Portugal/Realism

 

Brief Biography-Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro of Lisbon was the son and brother of artists Manuel Maria and Rafael. He was trained by his father and influenced by the Portuguese portraitist Miguel Lupi. A patron financed him to go to Paris to study, there he was influenced by the realists Courbet and Manet. His works consisted of portraits, mostly of Portuguese notables such as the poet Antero de Quental and other renowned writers of his time. He was part of The Lion’s Group, which was made up of artists and writers of Lisbon for discussion on many topics. He became director of the now Chiado Museum, Lisbon, which presently houses many of his works.
