Francesco Ribalta

1565-1628 Spain/Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Francesco Ribalta was born in Castellon de la Plana and began his studies in Valencia, it is possible he may have also studied in El Escorial. In Italy where he spent three years, he was influenced by the artists Sebastiano del Piombo and Raphael, however his later tenebrist style was inspired by Caravaggism. When he returned to Spain he married and settled in Valencia, there he was to be buried on his death. His paintings are mostly of religious subject and he was regarded with high esteem throughout Spain. He is said to have had a substantial influence on Francisco Zurbarán. His son Juan also became an artist, however he died at the early age of thirty-one, the same year his father died.
