Janis Rozentāls

1866-1916 Latvia/Impressionism

 

Brief Biography-Janis Rozentāls was born in the Courland Governorate of Russia, which is now part of Latvia. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Art before returning to his home town Saldus for a two-year period. In 1901 he settled in Riga where he got married to a Finnish singer and had three children. They lived in Helsinki for the remainder of his life, which came to an abrupt end in 1916 due to illness. His works ranged from portraiture to landscapes and graphic art. He was regarded as one of the most prominent of Latvian artists of his time.
