|
Brief Biography-Pieter Jansz Saenredam was born in Assendelft in 1597. In Haarlem, where he remained for his life, he was a disciple of Frans Pieterzen de Grebber, whom he stayed with for eleven years. After which, he primarily became a painter of churches, and he set his attention on the correct perspective. He did many paintings of Saint Bavo in Haarlem, Saint Mary's Church at Utrecht, and several churches in other Dutch towns. In 1623 he became a master of the Guild, and he associated with the architect and painter Jacob van Campen. Before he painted, he made very detailed drawings with perspective lines and diagrams, brushed with wash and sometimes not painted until years later. Subsequently, his clear perspective made a lasting impression on Dutch artists of the day. Saenredam's remains lie in the Cathedral of Saint Bavo in Haarlem. |
