Ivan Shishkin
1832-1898 Russia/Realism
|
Brief Biography-Ivan Shishkin was born in Yelabuga, Russia, in 1832. He studied art at the Moscow School of Painting and the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He gained a scholarship to study abroad, which enabled him to visit Germany and Switzerland. On his return, he became a professor of painting at the academy and later entered the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions. They were a group of artists opposed to the restrictions of academicism; however, he always exhibited with the academy. His works are renowned for their spectacular forest landscapes. |
