Wallerant Vaillant

1623-1677 Netherlands-Mezzotints

 

Brief Biography-Wallerant Vaillant was considered the inventor of mezzotint. Born in Lille northern France; he studied in Antwerp before travelling to Germany and France to work. He eventually moved to Amsterdam where he established himself as a principal portraitist.
