Claude Joseph Vernet

1714-1789 France-Rococo

 

Brief Biography-Claude Vernet was strongly influenced by the works of Claude Lorrain when he worked in Rome, other influences were Salvator Rosa and Hubert Robert. His work consisted mostly of landscapes and seaports. Louis XV commissioned a series of seaport paintings which can be seen in the Louvre. His son Carle and his grandson Horace were to become renowned painters in their time.
