Worthington Whittredge

1820-1910 America-Landscape Painter

Brief Biography-Worthington Whittredge from Cincinnati, Ohio went to Paris in 1849 for formal instruction but decided his circumstances were more suited to The Academy in Düsseldorf. He studied with Emanuel Leutze the German American history painter and stayed in Düsseldorf for seven years before going to Rome via a short stay in Switzerland. Whilst in Europe he became associated with Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford, both artists of the Hudson River School. They all excelled in landscape painting. Whittredge moved to New York 1859 where he set up studio and was a member of the National Academy of Design. He spent the last twenty years of his life painting in Summit, New Jersey where he died.
