Caspar van Wittel

c1653-1736 Netherlands Veduta-Baroque

 

Brief Biography-Caspar van Wittel was from Amersfoort in Holland. He received his schooling in Amersfoort and worked as a draughtsman before leaving for Italy at the age of twenty-one. In Rome he became one of the first of a group of artists to paint veduta, or accurate views similar to that of Canaletto. He was known as Gaspare van Vanvitelli in Rome. He spent his life in Italy and visited many cities including Venice and Florence where he produced several paintings. He died in Rome in 1736.
