Leonardo Alenza y Nieto

1807-1845 Spain/Neoclassicism

 

Brief Biography-Leonardo Alenza y Nieto was born in Madrid in 1807. He was an etcher and painter who studied under Juan Rivera and José de Madrazo at the Real Academia de San Fernando. His paintings were mainly of genre scenes for which he became famous. The Academy admitted him in 1842, and he was a professor shortly before his death. Sadly, he died in extreme poverty at age 38 due to tuberculosis. His most famous painting is Satire on Romantic Suicide.
