Brief Biography-Jose Ferraz de Almeida Junior from Brazil has an Artist’s Day celebrated in his honour on his birthday every year. José began his career by taking formal tuition in Rio de Janeiro with the help of funds raised by a local priest from his hometown. In 1876, Emperor Pedro the Second awarded him funds to study at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he stayed until 1882. He produced many great works of art during his time in Paris, some of which he brought back to Brazil. José opened his studio and excelled in doing portrait commissions on his return to Brazil. He became a Knight of the Order of the Rose and made a few returns to Europe before settling in Sao Paulo. Sadly, in 1899, Almeida was murdered on the street by a cousin because of his affair with his wife. |
