Brief Biography-Julian Ashton was born in Surrey, England and spent his early years in Cornwall. At twenty-one, he moved to Paris, where he succeeded as a painter and illustrator. Ashton left for Melbourne in 1878 and worked as an illustrator, moving to Sydney after five years and becoming a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 1890, he established the Julian Ashton Art School, which tutored many of Australia’s most renowned artists. |
