|
Brief Biography-Jan Asselyn was born in Diepen. Esaias van de Velde, the landscape artist, was his tutor. His friends and Bentvueghels associates called him Crabbetje because of his curved hook-like fingers, but they did not inhibit his abilities to paint exceedingly well. He spent ten years in Italy, where he gained many inspirations, working in and around Rome, and spent time in Florence with Matthieu van Plattenberg. Claude Lorain was one of his main influences; however, Nicolaes Pieterzoon Berchem and Jan Dirksz Both also impressed him greatly. In addition, he was a friend of Rembrandt, who etched an image of him. The painting The Threatened Swan in the Rijksmuseum is one of his most renowned works. |
