Nikolai Astrup
1880-1928 Norway/Neo-romanticism
|
Brief Biography-Nicholai Astrup was from Bremanger, Norway. He is one of Norway’s most prominent artists to this day. He was brought up in a strict religious household by his father, a priest. His ambition to become an artist was against the family’s principles. He spent most of his life in Jølster, where the local landscapes inspired him in all seasons. He studied in Oslo and Paris during his training years and travelled to Germany to view the museums. Henri Rousseau and Arnold Bocklin influenced him, who he named one of his sons after. In 1902, he married a local peasant girl and had eight children. They lived on a farm but had a meagre existence, and Astrup suffered from bad health. However, he still became one of Norway’s great painters alongside Edvard Munch. |
