Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem (Claesz)
1620-1683 Netherlands/Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Berchem was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He was born in Haarlem in 1624, according to Rev M Pilkington. His father, Pieter Claesz, the still-life painter, was his tutor. He also received instruction from other artists, such as Jan Baptist Weenix and Jan van Goyen. He either took his new name, Berchem, from a nickname, Berg hem, or from the town, Berchem, where his father may have been born.
He travelled around Italy and became familiar with the Italianate landscape, for which his works became most noted. He spent his later years in Amsterdam. Pieter de Hooch and Jacob Ochtervelt were two of his many documented students. |
