The family moved to Utrecht when he was a young boy. His early influence was from Frans Floris, and later in life; the works of Caravaggio inspired him. Paris was to be his study ground for three years before returning to Utrecht, where he became Dean of The Guild of Saint Luke. He achieved a high reputation with his painting The Death of Niobe, which Emperor Rudolph purchased for a considerable sum. Finally, all his sons became painters, Cornelis, Frederick, Hendrick, and Adrian being the most talented. Abraham influenced many Dutch artists, notably Gerard van Honthorst and Jan Baptist Weenix. |
