Gregor von Bochmann

1850-1930 Estonia/Germany-Impressionism

Brief Biography-Gregor von Bochmann was born in Western Estonia in 1850. He developed an early interest in landscape scenes while travelling with his father, a forest warden. On realising his talents, his schoolteacher in Tallinn arranged for him to enter the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, where he studied under Oswald Achenbach. He achieved a successful career in Düsseldorf and made painting trips to Estonia and neighbouring countries. He was later a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and had the title of Royal Prussian Professor bestowed on him. Kaiser Wilhelm II presented him with the title of nobility in 1899.
