Andries Both
c. 1612-1641 Holland/Italy Baroque
|
Brief Biography-Andries Both from Utrecht was the older brother of Jan Dirksz Both, who was also a successful artist. The two of them studied under Abraham Bloemaert. They spent time in Italy, where they were founder members of the Bamboccianti group of genre artists from northern Europe. They were also members of the Bentvueghels group in Italy.
Speculation is that Andries drowned in a canal in Venice on his way home from a night out. However, according to an account by the Rev. M. Pilkington, Jan drowned in Venice, and Andries returned to Utrecht. He states the first account was by Sandrart and the latter by other historians. | |
