|
Brief Biography-Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was born in the village of Senoji Varėna, Lithuania. He was a child prodigy; he became an accomplished composer at a very young age after studying in Warsaw and Leipzig. He composed numerous musical works and was also a notable writer and poet. He took up art at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts in 1902, and by 1907 he became a founding member of the Lithuanian Union of Fine Arts. Unfortunately, his family were polish speaking, and he only became fluent in Lithuanian when he married in 1909. While exhibiting works in Saint Petersburg that year, he suffered from severe depression and, in 1910, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Poland, where he tragically died of pneumonia in 1911. His works have been celebrated worldwide and attributed by some scholars to synaesthesia
