Claudio Coello

Brief Biography-Claudio Coello, whose parents were Portuguese, was born in Madrid. He was a disciple of Francisco Rizi and studied the paintings of Titian, Rubens and Van Dyck in Spanish palaces. Claudio also spent time in Italy observing the works of masters there, and after painting King Charles II, he was appointed Painter of the Bedchamber and Architect. Apart from El Escorial and Madrid, he executed notable works in Saragossa, Toledo, and Salamanca. Although his most famous work is Charles II adoring the Blessed Sacrament in El Escorial, it took him several years to complete. He died in Madrid in 1693. |
